The Boss Fight Was My Own Expectations All Along

Hey guildies đź’ś

Today I want to share a personal game mechanic I had to unlearn: the endless reload loop of "what should be happening."

You know the one. You're deep into a dungeon (aka life), and suddenly - BAM! Something doesn’t go according to plan. Your tank Leroy Jenkinses into a mob, your healer’s cat walks across their keyboard, or life just decides to patch in chaos mode overnight. And instead of adapting like the clever, seasoned player I am, I’d freeze up. I'd waste all my mental mana going, “This isn't how it's supposed to go!” I’d burn energy trying to crowd-control reality itself instead of, you know, moving my actual character.

But here's what gaming taught me (after far too many wipes): You don’t get to control the raid. You get to control your reaction.

Shift Your POV, Not Just Your Camera Angle
Games are full of unpredictable moments - glitches, lag spikes, nerfed gear. But the best players aren’t the ones who never face obstacles. They’re the ones who adapt. They don’t argue with the RNG gods. They roll with the crit fails, improvise new strategies, and keep the group moving.

IRL Skill Tree: Emotional Agility
Eventually, I realized I was putting all my XP into trying to change external conditions, when what I really needed was to spec into self-awareness and emotional regulation. (Not sexy, but extremely OP.) The moment I started focusing on what is happening instead of what should be, everything changed. Less stress. More clarity. Better decisions. Fewer metaphorical aggro pulls.

CTRL+ALT+DEL My Control Issues
Turns out, trying to control the uncontrollable is like mashing buttons in a cutscene. It feels like you’re doing something, but it’s all illusion. The real power? Comes when you put down the controller, take a breath, and choose your next move with intention.

So here’s your reminder from a fellow gamer: You’re not failing. You’re just learning the game mechanics of a new level. Stay curious. Stay flexible. And for the love of all things pixelated, stop trying to tank the whole universe. Just play your class.

Hit me in the comments: What’s one moment in life where you had to respec your expectations?
