Hacking your nervous system

Listed below are a few tricks you can reliably use to nudge your nervous system in the direction you want it to go.

Can’t get moving in the morning:

  1. Use a sunrise alarm clock to help waken naturally and slowly: Sunrise Alarm Clock

  2. Or use a vibrating wrist alarm for heavy sleepers: Vibrating Alarm Band

  3. Set alarms across the room

  4. Essential oil like lemon and peppermint set prior to getting up

  5. Cold/ice drink as you wake

  6. Colder shower (shock your system)

  7. Smoothie in the morning to get going – helps with proprioception

  8. Identify your transition sticking points - post it notes on doors and walls can help.

  9. Set alarms for when to be done with a task (on phone or microwave)

  10. Reminders on the calendar

  11. Review the night before and morning of and keep going back to the list for what to do

  12. Listen to fast music

Struggle to attend after school/work activities:

  1. Balance ball (stand on it or a wobble board)

  2. Balance on one foot and stand at the counter to get items done (alerts nervous system)

  3. Drink something cold

  4. Set alarms (create a pressure cooker)

  5. Use lists and go back to task lists

  6. Smoothie

  7. Drink from a straw

  8. Eat something crunchy to wake the nervous system

Feeling overwhelmed:

  1. Control the sounds with an mp3 player or headphones with your phone

  2. Limit the sounds with Flare or Loop earplugs

  3. Sensory hoodies for kids and for adults

  4. Use polyvagal exercises to calm the nervous system

  5. Heavy weight calms the nervous system (weightlifting, body weight exercises, weighted vest).

  6. Sucking through a straw

  7. Drinking from a camel back water bottle with a bite valve

  8. Smoothie or shake
